Hartford Rom-Com Rolls Back Into Town

In 2010, one of the Hartford locations used for the filming of indie rom-com Rising Star was the Connecticut Science Center. On Friday, August 3, the film will be screened twice at that very same spot as part of its local red carpet premiere.

Funded through Kickstarter for just over $15,000, Rising Star is, so far, a rising star on the film festival circuit. When it world premiered in May at the Seattle True Independent Film Fest, it became the first-ever event entry from out of town to sell out its first screening. As a result, STIFF organizers created and bestowed a special award to writer-director-producer Marty LangBest Premiere.

At press time, the first Friday Hartford screening is sold out and the second well on its way to being a full house as well. It probably didn't hurt that Lang is the educational director for the Connecticut Film Festival, an annual Danbury event co-sponsoring these screenings.

Tomorrow night's audiences will no doubt get a kick out of fact that the film was shot entirely in their town. Truth is, Hartford has been criminally underutilized as a filming location. Adding to the local resonance is the fact that the lead character Chris (Gary Ploski) toils in the white collar insurance industry.
