The Power of a Vimeo 'Short of the Week' Pick

A couple of months ago, Chapman University grad Cameron Sawyer got an early 2013 Christmas gift. His 2009 short She's a Fox was highlighted by Vimeo staff as a "Short of the Week."

Sawyer already had a major card up his sleeve: the presence in his cast of Hailee Steinfeld, a young actress who a year after She's a Fox would gain major stardom and an Academy Award nomination for her stunning performance in the Coen brothers' remake of True Grit. But that was then and this is now; after a great festival run, Sawyer has been able to bask in a new wave of moviegoer attention thanks to the Vimeo highlighting.

As the Utah native recently told a local TV station, he is planning once again to mine his high school experiences for his next project. The circa-1987 She's a Fox is all about trying to get the attention of the most beautiful girl on campus:

The story [of his next project] will follow an impeached high school student body president who is trying to win a leadership scholarship to the school of his dreams in the 1990s. "I was probably the worst student body president in Orem High School's history," Sawyer said.

Ha ha. Sawyer is hoping to shoot this one in Utah in the fall. And if he's lucky, his casting instincts will once again lead him to some prodigious talent on the level of the now high-flying Steinfeld.
