An Award-Winning Bag

For Telluride filmmaker Susan Beraza, it all started when her hometown challenged Aspen to see which Colorado community could most effectively reduce the use of plastic grocery bags. Pondering the topics of plastic and recycling, Bezara went on to make BagIT, a film that won Best Documentary Feature earlier this month at the Ashland Independent Film Festival and is scheduled to screen in Telluride during the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend Mountainfilm festival event.

BagIT runs the topics of plastic and the environment through the eyes of local TV host and comedian Jeb Berrier, whose simple decision to give up using plastic grocery bags leads to a much larger commitment as he discovers the devastating impact of the pervasive material on Planet Earth. Berrier educates himself about everything from how much energy it takes to produce a single plastic bottle to the infamous pile of Pacific Ocean debris that has grown to be twice the size of Texas. Ashland Film Festival director Tom Olbrich gave BagIT high praise, deeming it “one of the top couple of films that changed my life this year.”
