At 11:11 a.m. on Sunday, November 11th, UK filmmaker Anna Littler will activate the digital premiere of her World War II period drama Blitz & Bananas! Made with the citizens of Bromley and based on their collective wartime memories, it tells the story of a group of plucky young sisters helping fellow south east London residents affected by the Blitz.
It took two years for Littler to make the movie. Most of the on-camera talent are unproven locals, though she did manage to get a pair of recognizable married British TV names – Brian Murphy (George and Mildred) and Linda Regan (Hi-De-Hi) – to play grandparents. The film is priced at €3.99, with half of all proceeds going to the British Royal Legion.
Blitz & Bananas! had a more conventional premiere in Bromley earlier this year on April 1st. The film started out as anything but; Littler set out in 2010 to research World War II stories to mark the 70th anniversary of the Blitz and quickly realized she had the makings of a movie.
