Sacramento-based movie maker Deon Taylor started with a cheeky high-concept horror premise: a crazed killer sends out an electronic chain letter to six Carlson High School students and becomes very unhappy when they fail to text or email it forward. Then, Taylor cast a couple of semi-names into the mix, Nikki Reed and Brad Dourif.
The end result: national distribution this coming August for Chain Letter via Sherman Oaks, CA based New Films International. Unlike a certain Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie, the dulcet tones of the AOL prompt "You've got mail" signal in this case anything but the beginning of a frothy romance. New Films and its PR partners will no doubt make use of the electronic chain letter concept to market the film to text-obsessed teens.
